Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin signed an order on January calling for
the federal government to switch to Linux from proprietary operating systems
such as Microsoft Windows. The changeover is supposed to start by the middle
of next year and be completed by 2015. The order affects all Russian federal
agencies and any organizations funded by the federal budget.
