French schools go open source
Linux got yet another boost today with
news that French schools across the
nation are to deploy the operating system
on Cobalt servers.
Cobalt - which manufactures distinctive
blue qube servers - has done a deal with
France Telecom to put the boxes into schools through reseller DNS
Telecom.
The roll-out will begin later this month. A spokesman for the
company said the qube is perfect for the education market because
they are specifically designed to be set-up by people with minimal
IT skills. Using Linux, he added, was also an obvious choice
because of the lack of software licensing costs.
Cobalt launched in Europe in August 1998 (see 'Windows NT gets
slammed as Linux gets a boost' www.silicon.com/a23135 ) and has
had some success in the ISP market. However, this is its first big
win in the education market.
